"DISCOVERING MUMBAI" is an exhibition tracing the history of Mumbai, through its culture, architecture, economy and cityscape. It showcases the city’s vibrancy and the significance it has for a common man.

This exhibition has been curated by Architect Gautam Naik, in association with You.Art, under the guidance of Mumbai International Airport Limited.

The idea is to depict the journey of Mumbai from being a fishing village to the maximum city that it is now, in our artists’ own language. To not populate the area with overwhelming art, the concept has been deciphered into 5 topics, one for each wall.

Curator's Note

The Discovering Mumbai is a narrative that has been disseminated on the five walls of Mumbai T1 arrival food court. These arts take us back to the era when Mumbai was a cluster of 7 Islands separated by Arabian Sea. Right from lifestyle of fishermen folks staying then to this day 2023, the entire story is artistic expression traced through themes like History of Mumbai, Industrial Revolution, Mayanagari, From Dawn to Dawn, and The Mumbai Spectacle- Architecture.

Mumbai still addressed as Bombay by many world over, the economic capital, the city that never sleeps, the maxim city, the city with BEST or the best city, The city which is the worlds oldest reclamation project, the city which was ruled by many from Maratha and Mughal dynasties before Portuguese and British arrived, the city with wonders like - Mumbai Dabbawalas who have won many six sigma management awards, the city with Mumbai local train network where every day population equivalent to the population of Australia travel., The city of Joy the economic capital of India, the city with first five star hotel in the country, the city of dreams, the Bollywood, the city that is birth place of Indian film industry and so many chronicles of “Aamchi” Mumbai had to be represented through art.

The Research on this city revealed many hidden facets of Mumbai, like the Art Deco architecture that is still preserved here, it’s a second place in the world with so many buildings in Art Deco Architecture, there are foot prints of human architecture right from 1st century that still exist in the form of cave architecture and now UNESCO World heritage site in Mumbai, the Kanheri Caves. Today worlds best Architects have their presence in Mumbai. Sir Norman Foster and Zaha Hadid Architects to name among few. India’s top industrialists have their head offices in Mumbai, right from the beginning of Indian Industrial revolution till now.

Delineation of all this research on the subject of heart of Mumbai had to be done with a lot of aesthetical sensibility. Acclaimed artists with diverse skills from Mumbai were chosen for this exercise with keen observation, the design for background had to be distinctive and in sync with the art in foreground. It was an extensive experience with artistic innovation and an astounding creative indulgence.

Discovering Mumbai is designed strategically in the interest of the artists who are participating. All the art works displayed here are prints of original unique artworks exclusively created for this venture by 18 acclaimed Mumbai based artists that are showcased on these walls fashionably in Museum art style . These original artworks can be purchased online. This is an unequaled art exercise, which goes by the ethos of You. Art - “Art is for everyone.”
