Depicted in this Still-Life painting, the colourful jamkalam [the dhurrie in TamilNadu] has been used as the table cloth. Beautifully engraved bookends depict the numerous artistic temples that were built during the Chola reign around the 10th Century. The brass uruli and fragrant jasmine [mogra] flowers are typically commonplace in and around the Tanjore or Thanjavur region that served as the chola capital. The background colours speak for the glorious period in South Indian history. The purpose is to give the viewers of my paintings a sense of belonging. To rekindle memories associated with these places. To feel at home.
